Oops! Did I do that? (Natural hair transition ‘uncut’ to Big Chop)
I had been transitioning from a relaxer to natural hair for 8 months. After 5 months, I had grown tired of wrestling with the two textures. For 2 1/2 months I wore Afro Kinky Twist. And then it happened…
Once a week while wearing my twist, I used a solution to clean my scalp.When the new growth could no longer be tamed, I prepared to take the twist out the following day. I normally use a pre-treatment on my hair before washing. Depending on how its styled at the time, this can vary from conditioner w/ added oils or honey, to only an oil mixture (Coconut Oil & Olive Oil). Needless to say, I needed to do the oil-based one because my hair had been in a protective style for so long…it would desperately need detangling.
At the time I was ready to do my pre-treatment, it was a mad house in here. The kids were arguing, the hubby was asking questions (verbally, not signing), and all I wanted to do was focus on what I was doing.
Once I got things settled, I came back to finally do my pre-treatment…but I did the wrong one! I did the treatment using the conditioner, left it on with a baggy, then made matters worse by not attempting to detangle at all. Still frazzled from the previous household activity, I made it even worse by getting into the shower to do my regular washing. That was when I realized I had not detangled at all. It was too late…there were mats everywhere. I quickly got out of the shower to attempt to comb them out. After combing through about 3 of them, I put down the comb, and grabbed the scissors!
I remembered that the whole purpose of the transition was to eventually remove the relaxed ends. Even though I had planned to wait until May 2010, now was as good a time as any. And honestly the natural hair had already dominated my head…the relaxed hair was just lingering waiting to be put out of its misery.
Here’s a picture walk of my transition:

Smooth transition.
Looks great! I’m working on my damaged hair….can’t wait to wear it natural.
Don it was a pretty smooth transition. Though sometimes I thought I would lose my mind! lol. Thanks :~)
Darcel Hunny, hang in there! If it wasn’t for YouTube videos and natural hair blogs…I don’t know how I would have made it! Thanks for the compliment :~)
P.S. I visited your site earlier and I want you to know that I’m a fellow “birth junkie” as well. I will definitely be visiting again!
Alright! Looks great!
@Coretta thanks lady :~)
